Who needs a Radio operator licence?

You'll need a radio operator's license if you are operating a radio on designated marine frequencies such as:

Automatic Identification System

Automatic Identification System (AIS)

Automatic Identification Systems are used by ships and Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels.

AIS helps to resolve the difficulty of identifying ships when not in sight (e.g. in fog, etc.) by providing a means for ships to exchange data with all other nearby ships and VTS stations. This includes:

Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

Digital Selective Calling (DSC)

DSC provides a paging system that is used to automate distress alerts sent over terrestrial (non-satellite):

  • VHF marine radio systems
  • MF marine radio systems
  • HF marine radio systems

Digital Selective Calling operation

DSC operates by sending remote-control commands which print messages on a display panel or a remote printer.

This groundbreaking innovation was judged the most innovative school telecommunications service in 2005. (TUANZ Innovations Awards).

“It was like riding a pushbike one day and driving a Ferrari the next,” says former principal, Daryl Aim.
