Highway Wi-Fi Networks

Highway Wi-Fi Networks

RoamAD deployed the world’s first Highway Wi-Fi network on an interstate highway in Arizona, USA in 2005. Funded by the Department of Homeland Security of the United States, this Highway Wi-Fi network has the following characteristics:

  • The network owner and services provider, WI-VOD, delivers mobile voice and data services to first responders in vehicles moving at more than 140 km/h
  • The network serves as backhaul infrastructure for a number of CCTV/surveillance cameras located on the highway
  • The network provides internet access to a large number of residential homes in the area

Benefits of a Highway Wi-Fi Network

  • Coverage and connectivity along the highway and adjacent to the highway
  • Support for high speed mobile hands-off for voice, data and video
  • Suitable as backhaul infrastructure for CCTV/surveillance cameras
