Information for TV installers

Info for digital terrestrial (DTT) TV installers

Kordia™ is installing 18 DTT broadcast sites around New Zealand. These sites will provide digital terrestrial television coverage to ¾ of New Zealand’s population.

In order for viewers to receive DTT, they will need to have a suitable:

  • MPEG-4 set-top-box (STB) or integrated receiver
  • UHF aerial that can receive the DTT signal from one of the 18 broadcast sites

DTT key transmission parameters

The DTT service is based on New Zealand DVB-T specification (NZS 6610:2001). It has the following key transmission parameters:

  • Video encoding: H.264 AVC (MPEG-4)
  • Modulation Scheme: COFDM 64-QAM
  • FEC Code Rate: 3/4
  • Guard Interval: 1/16
  • Number of Carriers: 8K

The DVB-T specification is part of the internationally recognised DVB family of standards with appropriate parameters for New Zealand.

Using the UHF band, New Zealand is one of the first to adopt the MPEG-4 video encoding standard. For this reason it is important to ensure that the equipment is compatible with the New Zealand signal.

Transmission, programming and aerial installation

Kordia™ is responsible for the transmission of the broadcaster’s signal to the coverage areas. The broadcasters are responsible for the programming content. Any queries regarding programming should be directed to the appropriate broadcaster.

The viewer is responsible for their own UHF TV aerial installation. In many cases, existing UHF aerial installation will be adequate.

Standard-definition and high-definition

The DTT platform can support both standard-definition (SD) and high-definition (HD). To ensure the viewer can enjoy the full HD experience, their should ensure their receiver and TV display is capable of HD and is HDMI HDCP compatible.
