Direct to Home Satellite (DTH)

Direct to Home Satellite (DTH) services

Direct-to-home (DTH) satellite distribution servicesKordia™ is now able to provide broadcasters both television and radio direct-to-home (DTH) distribution services.

These are delivered through the Optus D1 satellite at 160.0°E.

Digital broadcast satellite services are available from Kordia™'s head-end and up-linking facilities.

Kordia™ currently provides a range of terrestrial broadcast contribution services to New Zealand broadcasters. We can provide this service to transport satellite broadcasters’ content to the Avalon head-end.

Satellite Television Service

Kordia™'s satellite television service can be received on a 60cm receiving dish where a clear line-of-sight to the Optus D1 satellite—located at 160.0°E—is present.
This satellite is also used by Freeview broadcasters Television New Zealand and CanWest for carriage of their free-to-air satellite channels. These include TVONE, TV2, TV3, and C4.

Depending on the requirements of the broadcaster, Kordia™ provides:

  • Television linking from the broadcasters studio to the Kordia™ head-end and up-link in Wellington
  • Service Information (SI Metadata) linking between the broadcaster and Freeview’s SI service provider
  • Video and audio compression (MPEG2 is the video compression standard and statistical multiplexing of the encoded content)
  • Multiplexing of the television content into a composite transport stream (Kordia™ applies statistical multiplexing to the video services)
  • RF modulation, up-conversion and up-linking via the 6.8m Kordia™ up-link antenna at Avalon (referred to as up-linking)

DTH Platform

Kordia™ offers three quality levels on the DTH platform. The most appropriate service quality is dependent on the needs of the broadcasters and the content type proposed.

Digital Radio Satellite Distribution Service Overview

Kordia™ can provide a digital satellite radio broadcasting service via the Optus D1 Satellite.

A range of audio bit-rates are available to support both mono and stereo services.

Other digital satellite applications

The DTH Satellite signal can also be used for other digital satellite based services. These include:

  • As the input to a terrestrial transmission system in an emergency/disaster situation. i.e. as part of a DRP process
  • For primary distribution of encrypted and restricted program content to remote studio locations (for insertion of local commercials and content)
  • As the primary input to a terrestrial re-broadcast transmission site where a terrestrial linking input is impractical or uneconomic
  • To provide encrypted narrowcasting and/or pay-television services to closed end user groups
