The OptiKor project was initiated several years ago because Kordia considered a new Trans-Tasman cable to be essential to replace the ageing Tas2 cable.
Kordia still strongly believes that securing a new cable between New Zealand and Australia is critical to both increase the resilience of New Zealand’s connectivity with the rest of the world and to further bring down international bandwidth price by providing access to competing international cable networks.
Axin and Huawei Marine are now leading the OptiKor project and have recently announced a marine survey agreement.
“We are delighted that the cable survey agreement has been signed,” says Kordia CEO Geoff Hunt. “This is the next critical step in the process.”
To clarify, Kordia has collaborated with Axin on various aspects of this project over time but has not signed a commercial agreement to operate the cable.
Axin is managing all the commercial arrangements of Optikor.
